Scouts Australia National News - April 2017
A Brand New Leadership Program for Scouts Australia
You + Lead is underway!
It’s a brand new leadership program for Scouts, Venturers and Rover Scouts.
You is a state-based personal development event. It’s learning about yourself to better understand how you can lead others.
The Lead component develops the attitudes, skills and experiences to lead at a week-long national course.
Once you complete the You and Lead components, you’ll join the alumni. This is an opportunity to put your skills into practice by collaboratively taking on a variety of community roles and responsibilities.
Applicants apply to participate in the You program and then, if accepted, attend the Lead course and then Alumni.
2017 is the pilot year with You events taking place in QLD, NSW, VIC, ACT, SA, WA. Successful participants can then apply for the Lead course to be held in Adelaide during October.
Further information, including how to register, is available here.

Their Service, Our Heritage
If you’re participating in an ANZAC Day Ceremony on the 25th April, don’t forget that you could be eligible for the “Their Service, Our Heritage Badge!” By learning about our Veterans over a minimum of two activities, youth members will have a greater understanding of Australia’s history. Other activities Scouts may explore are:
- Take part in Rememberance Day
- Invite a Veteran to your meeting
- Visit a Veterans Home or the local RSL
- Maintain your local Memorial
- Visit a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Once you’ve completed a minimum of two activities, head to the Scoutshop.com.au to purchase Their Service, Our Heritage badge.

To our adults in Scouting, thank you for your contributions to the Scouting movement.
National Youth Week Celebrations a Success
National Youth Week was a celebration of young people held at the start of April. Celebrations of young people’s talents, ideas, community contributions and dreams were held around the county. Elodie Prinsloo, National Commissioner Youth Empowerment, celebrated National Youth Week by recognising the important role of Scouts Australia in developing young people to their full potential. "As Australia's largest youth development organisation, we're empowering our youth members to think globally and act locally. By providing leadership opportunities for our members, young Australians can act as change makers in their community on projects meaningful to them. For example, members of the Scouts Australia National Youth Council are acting as Community Advocates on the Global Goals for Sustainable Development to enact change for a better world."
