International Scouting News
The International Team continues to strive hard to realise its vision of allowing "every youth member of Scouts Australia to have an international experience".
Get Involved! Become part of the Contingent Management Team!
As a youth training and development organisation, we want to help as many youth members as possible develop their leadership and team membership skills. To this end, we encourage youth members to apply for Contingent Management Team positions. This will also help to position youth for Contingent Leader positions in future years. Scouts Australia remains committed to supporting and assisting youth in senior international positions, including through advisers and mentors. For more information email firstname.lastname@example.org
The Timor-Leste Scout Activities Centre, the first of its kind in the country, has now been gifted to Timor-Leste Scouts. Scouts Australia will maintain support for Scouting in Timor-Leste as it positions itself to apply for membership of World Scouting.
Papua New Guinea Scouts
Scouts Australia will endeavour to increase its support for PNG Scouts in 2015. Two PNG youth were sponsored to our National Venture in Adelaide in January, and two Leaders were sponsored to attend the Adventurous Activities Course in Queensland in January. In partnership with Queensland Scouts, assistance is being provided with leader training programs. Scouts Australia is also assisting PNG Scouts to host the Council of South Pacific Scout Associations (CSPSA) meetings, 25-28 May 2015.
Asia-Pacific Region (APR)
In partnership with Victorian Scouts, Scouts Australia is hosting the APR Workshop on Community Based Scouting (3-6 September 2015) and the APR Programme Sub-Committee meeting (7-8 September 2015), both at Gilwell Park, Melbourne.
New Branch International Commissioner (Victoria)
We heartily congratulate Lisa Picking on being selected, following a competitive selection process, as the new International Commissioner for the Victorian Branch. We welcome Lisa to our team, and very much look forward to working with her.
We would also thank David Bossen for his wonderful contribution to international Scouting for a number of years. We wish David all the best with his future Scouting commitments.
International participants at AV2015
We were delighted to see 60 international participants attend the National Venture in January. They were from Canada, Fiji, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda and the United Kingdom.
Kandersteg International Scout Centre, Switzerland
We are pleased that Johnathon Van der Wijngaart (Tasmanian Branch) was accepted as a staff member at KISC for winter 2014/15 and will shortly complete his three month term. It is great to see a number of applications from Rovers and older Venturers applying for volunteer positions at KISC for later this year. It is a unique experience, and a privilege, to serve as a "Pinkie" at Kandersteg. For further details, see http://www.international.scouts.com.au/work-or-volunteer.
New Zealand Venture
Applications for the 13th New Zealand Venture will open soon. Keep an eye on www.nzv2016.com for more information. After the popularity of this event in 2013, we’re sure places will disappear fast.
Finland National Jamboree
Scouts Australia is running a small contingent to this event in July 2016. Camp under the midnight sun with Scouts from the Nordic region and beyond. Submit an expression of interest on our website: http://international.scouts.com.au/travel-with-scouting/events-and-contingents
Asia Pacific Region Youth Forum and APR Scout Conference
The APR Youth Forum (29 October-1 November 2015) and the APR Scout Conference (3-8 November 2015) will be held in Korea. We will shortly be advertising up to three scholarships with 50% subsidy, to attend the Youth Forum and the APR Scout Conference. The advertising will be done through our national website, as well as through the National Rover and Youth Councils. Additionally, we will be seeking the help of the Branch Rover and Youth Councils, where appropriate, to advertise these valuable scholarships.
The APR Office will shortly be calling for applications for the "Outstanding APR Scout’ with finalists to be announced at the September APR Scout Conference. Again, keep a close eye on our national website for details.
Andrew Cooper, Assistant International Commissioner, is our contact person for the scholarships, and for the Outstanding APR Scout Award. Andrew can be contacted at email@example.com.
Applications are currently being accepted for participation in the SISEP program in 2014/15.
Exchange students leave Australia around the end of November and return mid-January. More information can be found at: http://www.international.scouts.com.au/sisep.
It is beneficial for a Venturer planning to go on exchange to be part of a host family first. Applications to participate as a host family are invited from families who have a son or daughter in Scouts or Venturer Scouts. Overseas visitors require host families for around six weeks in July and August (depending on their country’s school holidays), as well as a willing school and an active and friendly Venturer Scout Unit.
Detailed information on being a Host Family can be found at: http://www.international.scouts.com.au/sisep/.
The position of SISEP National Co-ordinator will be re- advertised shortly, with Barb Brook coming to the end of her extended term. For further details please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
The National Pen Pal program continues to expand. Japan is our latest partner. Pen Pal applications lodged in the last 12 months indicate a growing awareness amongst Leaders.
Links within Australia are now available and will be given equal importance to an international pen-pal exchange. The primary focus of the pen-pal program remains in expanding program awareness, acquiring new international partners and planning for AJ2016 requests. Go to http://www.international.scouts.com.au/programs-in-australia/penpals for more information.
